During the summer holidays it will be especially colourful, loud, and entertaining at MAGIC CITY – THE ART OF THE STREET: From Saturday July 29 to Sunday September 03, 2017 the exhibition offers a diverse programme for children, young people, and families. In addition to numerous holiday specials such as cool moves from Munich’s most talented breakdancers and unusual sounds from famous beatboxers, visitors can also look forward to additional Monday opening.
Highlights during the summer holidays | Juli 29 to September 3
MAGIC CITY is an exhibition where young and old can spend the whole day. Kids will be unable to contain their astonishment on discovering the small peepholes in the electricity junction boxes, revealing a hidden world of well known and bizarre new figures, or when they have taken the coolest family photo ever in the middle of the 3D works.
Fancy taking a look at MAGIC CITY from an animal perspective? No problem, simply visit the exhibition armed with the “Rallye” for plenty of animal excitement. Outside the exhibition the fun continues in the MAGIC Lab with workshops every Saturday offering participation, experimentation, and creativity. Families can discover all these adventures on their own initiative. On top of that, anyone who wants to get to know MAGIC CITY from an expert perspective is recommended to take a family tour. In a 75 minute circuit, a child-friendly Street Art expert takes you to the highlights, revealing a number of insider secrets.
- Guided tours on August 2, 9 and 16 at 11:00 am. Tickets available in advance
- Workshops in the Lab every Saturday
A playground for the imagination can be found both in the exhibition and outside it at the MAGIC Lab. Here young and old alike can try things out and design their own styles under the instruction of experienced graffiti and Street Art artists. The graffiti and Street Art workshops are organised in cooperation with “Die Färberei”, a municipal facility under the patronage of the District Youth Association.
Throughout the entire duration of the exhibition national and international guests will be regularly invited to freely create their own art in the MAGIC Lab. This temporary artist’s residence will serve as a studio for artists from Russia, China, Japan, and Germany, amongst other countries. The works produced during the various residencies will be on display in the Magic Lab for a period of two weeks respectively.
Beatbox, breakdance & calligraffiti belong to MAGIC CITY like the spray can to graffiti. Our beatboxer Eliot, a pioneer of the German Hip Hop movement, will be doing the honours once again. His equally talented colleague Trash will be giving his all, too, pounding out the beats.
Visitors can also look forward to the legendary Munich B-Boy Crew STEP 2 DIZ who will be laying down their cool breakdance moves on selected days. Every Monday there will be an artistic highlight which you can both marvel at and take away with you: Calligraffiti, a mixture of centuries old tradition (calligraphy) and the modern (graffiti), combined to create a unique art form. In the MAGIC Lab artists will be demonstrating the art of calligraffiti using fine pens. And anyone taking a closer look around MAGIC CITY will discover the grand old man of calligraffiti, Niels Shoe Meulman.
